Swedish Radio P1 has been broadcasting 24 hours, also available on the web until Dec 4, with and about Ingmar Bergman – Radio Bergman. Thank you public service radio for this!
Ingmar Bergman as a movie director maybe was too big for Sweden. Statistically he and his movie production are not likely to have occured here. Luckily they did anyway.
One Bergman memory I have is to come out into the street from the cinema 1976 in Lima, Peru, after seeing Scenes from a marriage (1973), carrying with me from the movie all this Swedishness (as I thought). The Peruvians must instead have seen something general about the human condition and male-female conditions. People from other nationalities, Russia not least, have also expressed their great admiration for Bergmans films.
It is difficult to select something that is better than the rest of his work. Still, I would like to mention Fanny and Alexander (1982) as a very rich movie full with magic and colour. Not to mention, that it won no less than 4 Oscar awards, one of course for the photo by Sven Nykvist, something otherwise unheard of for Swedish movies.
