Ptarmigan + joik

In Jokkmokk the 403d winter market took place during the last week. This is, and has always been, an event both for selling and buying, for meeting old friends, and enjoying food, drink and music.

Ptarmigan can be found in the meat stands in the outdoor parts of the market, but they can also be heard as part of the joik in the music appearances, when performed by Katarina Rimpi. Here are some images and sounds from the market. You can enjoy Katarina’s ptarmigan impersonation.

Many other excellent musicians appeared during the market as well, for example Niko Valkeapää Band, a unique and strange combination of joik and whispering jazz rock -including the sound a trumpet.

The ptarmigan are great, cooked in a bag or a clay pot. Use some lard or bacon to cover with so they don’t get to dry. Make a cream sauce, with or without black trumpet (see the connection?) mushrooms. Serve with a fine Rioja or other red of your liking.

The slide show is found at the NSD web.
